While there may be plenty of farmland surrounding North Platte, often residents of big cities like Detroit find themselves living in "food deserts," neighborhoods without access to affordable fresh produce.
Food deserts are a big problem for the health of communities, especially for the academic success of students. Think about the last time you were really hungry and all you had eaten all day was sugary processed cereal. Were you in any condition to learn calculus? Success in school lays the groundwork for the rest of these children's lives, so nutritious lunches are about so much more than healthy eating.
The Detroit School Garden Collaborative was formed to grow vegetables like corn and carrots locally, right in the city, and incorporate them into Detroit Public Schools cafeteria lunches. The fleet chosen to work the farms is made up of Ford vehicles, like the Ford F-150.
"Ford and Detroit are synonymous with tough," said Zaundra Wimberley, Farm and Garden Program Director for Detroit Public Schools. "The F-150 is a tough truck, and Detroiters are tough, resilient people."
