Fully-boxed frames are more rigid than the C-channel frames Ford used to use on its Super Duty trucks. The reason the Super Duty stuck so long with its C-channel frame is in part a function of weight -- adding more steel to the frame means more pounds on the truck, and fewer pounds that can be hauled.

For the 2017 model year, the Super Duty is getting a major redesign. Weight is being removed from the body by switching from steel to military-grade aluminum, and that weight is being reinvested in other areas, like the frame.

The 2017 Super Duty's fully-boxed frame is 24 times stiffer than the outgoing model, which pays dividends toward suspension isolation and handling while towing a payload.

Weight is also being added back in the form of larger brakes, and stronger axles and driveline. After all the additional material added in these components, the new Super Duty will still be hundreds of pounds lighter thanks to its aluminum body.
